Biography

Mr. Sutherland, originally from Clarence, NY, was appointed Principal Tubist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in September of 2004. Prior to joining the RPO, Craig served ten seasons as Tubist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, in Charleston, SC. Mr. Sutherland has spent summers in Santa Fe, NM as a member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, and in Sun Valley, ID as a member of the Sun Valley Music Festival Orchestra. He has also traveled across the US to perform with notable ensembles such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Seattle Symphony. In addition, Craig tours annually with the Burning River Brass Ensemble in Cleveland, OH, and is a member of the RPO brass quintet.

Mr. Sutherland received his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Abe Torchinsky and Fritz Kaenzig. Shortly thereafter, Craig was awarded the position of Principal Tubist with the Hofer Symphoniker and Rekkenze Brass Quintet, in Hof, Germany. Upon returning to the States, Mr. Sutherland was awarded a full scholarship to attend The Juilliard School where, under the tutelage of Warren Deck, he earned his master’s degree in Tuba Performance. Mr. Sutherland is currently a member of the faculty at the Eastman Community Music School, as well as Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Roberts Wesleyan University. Craig has also served many years as the RPYO’s low brass mentor.
